2005, Record Harvest for Sonoma County
As mentioned in Ratcast #13 in a discussion with Nick Frey of the Sonoma County Grape Growers Association, the season did have the potential to be a tank buster. And despite the dire predictions late into the season, the crops did ripen fully, and produced the largest crop ever in Sonoma County.

Wines from Emma's Birthday Dinner
2003 Ridge "Three Valleys" Sonoma County red -- Mostly Zinfandel, this blend was lighter than I expected from Ridge, although it had the aromatic complexity I expect from Ridge Zins.

May the forest be with you?
Demand for Pinot Noir, apparently, is pushing vineyard owners further up the coast to Sonoma County's cooler--and more heavily forested--climates reports the AP.

2003 Chateau St. Jean Sonoma County Fume Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc)
This is ALWAYS one of the best buys in a complex, balanced, drinkable white in the marketplace. I'll have to describe this one from memory, since my notes on this vanished -- a rare occurrence in my orderly, uncluttered house. . . . NOT. Chateau St. Jean always gets the oak quality and oak level just right on this wine, year after year.

Trentadue Old Patch Red 2003 Sonoma County Red wine
2003 Trentadue Tonight I wanted a red wine to go along with a steak - a filet, hand-rubbed with some stuff I got from the Perini Ranch Steakhouse. The Trentadue "Old Patch Red" turned out to be more than a match. Wish my photography was as much a match.

Good and bad surprises from the cellar
Knowing when it is the right time to drink a wine is always a challenge. You can always try to compute a window of drinkability based on numerous factors such as tannins, acidity, appellation, vintage, varietal, winemaker, ageability of the wine in past vintage, not to forget the storage conditions.

Power of Pinot
For some people pinot noir is chic and trendy. For others of us, it represents a decade or more of infatuation with a bewitching but elusive prize (I've been haunted by the intoxicating perfume of several vineyard-designated pinots and woefully let down by other thin, tart versions).
