WBW 18 - wine shops that "feel the love"
There are actually quite a few interesting places to shop for wine in the Austin area. There's always a tasting of something at the bar there and best of all they've got interesting weekly events going on.

I put together an interesting tasting last week that revolved around the theme of holiday selections. While I tend towards white wine with cheese because of the salt factor, this match was interesting.

(Too) Many Wines from a Weekend in New England
As you can see, we opened several interesting bottles.

Fewer Bordeaux AOCs?
Interesting news from Bordeaux. As many know, the AOC system has been under attack for causing consumer confusion -- particularly in the key UK and US markets. This has been one of the reasons sited for the downturn in the general French wine industry.

Starting the new year with Corie Brown
As life is not so interesting, this post will focus on Ms. Brown's article titled Putting Place in a Glass. I'm always wary of such stories as all wine growing seems to be a community based activity, yet the LA Times says that Hobbs had a big influence on the changes that took place in what is now one of the most interesting wine growing regions in the world.

Ramblings...
No interesting wines to write about today, but thought I'd just ramble on for a bit. I get some interesting comments to my posts on occasion.

2000 Argyle Brut - Ringin' in the new year
No doubt there have been a few interesting wines along the way and in between during the past couple weeks, so I thought I would start the new year off with a reasonably appropriate (timely) wine. I can't really lay a finger on it, but on top of just having a soft spot for Oregon, I thought maybe I could find an interesting sparkling wine from the US at this time of year.

Mayo Family Winery 2001 Ricci Vineyard Zinfandel Port (Russian River Valley)
Interesting, but a disappointment. Straightforward, ripe, simple stewed raspberries and earth on the nose. Fleshy and sweet, but lighter and simpler in the mouth than I had hoped. Eh. 76.

2001 Domaine Gramenon Cotes du Rhone "Cuvee Laurentides"
Not particularly concentrated, but nicely-balanced, soft, interesting, and enjoyable.

2003 Chateau de Pena Cotes du Roussillon Villages (SW France)
Not bad, but it is interesting that the cheapest wine of this co-op (Cuvee de Pena, a VDP blend, the 2003 of which I reviewed back in August 2005) is almost always, in my view, better than this wine, its slightly more expensive AOC sibling.

blog on wine blogs 2005
I thought that a review of the different blogs featured in our blog roll on Blog au Vin (I hope thats not too many blogs for you) would be interesting from a number of points of view. Second, its interesting to see to what extent any of us are thinking about the same things at the same time.

The wine has 'swing': or, wine as jazz and vice versa
I recently came across this interesting analogy entitled Does jazz rejoice the heart?

More January Whites(8): France Chenin Blanc, Canada Chard, Australia SB, Canada Blush, Canada Pinot Gris, USA Chard, NZ Sauv Blanc, France SB
A full-bodied european-style white with a tangerine peal finish, so have with salsa, seafood appetizers or light pasta or seafood dishes - for me, not a sipper but still interesting.

Critic watch: Asimov NYT
In his column in today's Times, Eric Asimov writes about Penfold's St. Henri, a $50 $35 "sibling" of Grange (find this wine). It's the first time he's written a column about Australian wines since August 18, 2004 when he favorably wrote about Australian Rieslings.

Price, critics and quality
A few weeks ago an interesting experiment was undertaken at the Brussels food fair, a yearly affair where food lovers wander around among the many stalls stuffed with all imaginable delicacies.

TN - Quinta do Noval White Port
Ryan saw an interesting quote on a forum some time ago that read, “Port has two duties - to be red and drunk.” Fair enough, but we don’t believe that neither “dry” nor “white” immediately come to the majority of people’s minds when they think of Port wine, and maybe it shouldn’t.

The next Wine Blogging Wednesday announced.
[The new wine blogging wednesday logo] An unusual challenge for Wine Blogging Wednesday 18 that in a nutshell boils down to a recommendation from your favourite wine shops staff. This is going to be tricky as the shops that get me most enthused and excited are are online or miles away (I no longer own a car).

Opposite Ends of the Wine World
There's an interesting story here. Has a kind of desperate tone as Aussie grape growers suddenly start getting cranky as Australian wine overproduction finally catches up with them. I wonder if they'll start to riot like those French fellows. Here in BC things are opposite. We can't get enough grapes and when we can they get hijacked by folks with bigger bank accounts.

Quest for a Great Merlot - The Tilting Begins
/My quest actually begins with a little research. (I am an aspiring wine geek after all.) I found myself wondering if I was trying to turn Merlot into something it just wasn't meant to be. So I did some reading. In a nutshell, this is what I've learned. Merlot started out primarily as a blending grape for the much sought after red wines of Bordeaux.

Hard cheese…
Having spoken to Philippe Marques for our People in Wine programme just before Christmas and learnt that Alain Senderens the great French chef had spent his whole life trying to tell people that red wine and cheese don't go together, it was interesting to see these results confimed in a more scientific way. Incidentally Monsieur [...]
