Okanagan Monday - Wine Work and Wrap-up
Skiing at our local mountain APEX was great this weekend. Lots of local winemakers up there. This time of year I see more on the mountain than I do in the valley.

It's that time of year when...
WAITING TO UNCORK It can be hard finding a drinking buddy. New Year's resolutions are still fresh from the oven and more people than usual want to swoop in for a roll on the wagon. Maybe that's my perception. I have been unrelentingly focused on wine lately.

Your Vouvray May Vary
When I'm asked what turned me on to wine, I respond, often ineloquently, that it is the intriguing tangle of climate, geography and culture. Occasionally, the follow-up gets dropped: What do you mean? What I mean can be summed up...

Cline Ancient Vine Zinfandel 2003 wine review by (PB)
This is a bad news/good news story. The bad news is this is my last bottle of this wine; the good news is, the 2004, which I have in my cellar, is even a mite better! This multiply reviewed wine is really nice Zinfande

Rosenblum Cellars Paso Robles Zinfandel 2004
Rosenblum Appellation Series Paso Robles Zinfandel 2004 is a blend of 86% Zinfandel, 7% Carignane, 5% Petite Sirah, and 2% Syrah. The grapes were sourced from Estancia Vineyards (east side of the Salinas River) and San Marcos Creek Vineyard

Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1996
Classic nose: rich red currants, cedar, ripe roasted red capsicum. Seems more Coonawarra than Margaret River to me. With time, the palate dries out and it becomes a bit one-dimensional and cedary (also showing a bit of acid)

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 1998
My first Southern Rhône for quite a while, and I wasn’t disappointed.  An enticing nose of blackberry and blackcherry sweetness, with some smoke, roasted meats and minerals. (Yes Matua, minerals) – squeaky clean.  Palate is supple and mature, perhaps a bit rustic, black smoky berries, and chewy fruit tannins and excellent length

Shaw and Smith Shiraz 2002
A nose dominated by cherry liqueur and white pepper.  The palate is beautifully textured and fruited, with fine tannins, and the balance of gymnast: red fruits and lots of white pepper – almost Langi-like.  A wine of tremendous promise.   Rated : 91 Points Tasted : Jan06 Alcohol : 14.5% Price : $35

Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
I can’t think of too many good Coonawarra cabernets from the 2002 vintage. Too hard and green most of them…so this effort from one of the biggest companies is even more impressive. Very strong colour. Perfumed aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, earth, mint and vanilla.

Laroche St Martin Chablis 2003
Quite straightforward with aromas of peach, tropical fruit, struck match and hazlenut. On the palate lightly fruity with white peach and mango flavours. Quite soft acidity. Lacks the minerality and tightness that I like in a chablis - no doubt the product of a hot vintage. Pleasant but better ways to spend $40 on a chardonnay.

Leo Buring Clare Valley Riesling 2005
Time to try the companion wine to the outstanding Eden Valley release of the same vintage. Very spicy aromas of sweet limes, lime leaf and some florals. On the palate a rich round riesling with flavours of sweet squeezed limes and apple. Slightly coarse and lacking in purity. Lots of flavour

Hewitson Ned and Henry Shiraz 2004
Opens up a bit reduced and charry then comes lots of juicy berry and dark grape aromas. Some volatility. Full bodied palate with more of the juicy dark berry fruit and savoury charry oak flavours. Sandy tannins and warm to hot with alcohol. Nice enough but I struggle with more than a glass of this wine.

Wynns Johnsons Block Shiraz/Cabernet 2003
A single vineyard wine from Wynn’s. Nice to see a big maker doing this sort of thing. I have not tried the 2001 Harold Block Cabernet as yet but am keen to try that one too. Aromas of raspberry jam, blackberry, violets, a dusting of pepper and oak.
