Las Brisas Rueda 2004
Christmas day was rainy, dark and dreary in Memphis. I suspect this is why I was drawn to the bright and happy label on this Sauvignon Blanc from Spain when I was deciding what wine would pair well with cooking Christmas dinner.

Griffin Creek A delightful gift. A wine, unavailable in the UK, lovingly cradled in hand-luggage from the West Coast to our little island. Perhaps the excitement rose the expectations too unattainable levels but the disappointment was hard to conceal.

Chateau Lafite-Rothschild (Pauillac) 1983
Good, but not exceptional, and thus rather disappointing, especially considering what I paid for it a few years ago (don't even ask ... I can't bear to go there!). In fairness, this bottle has developed substantial ullage (upper shoulder) since...

Christmas day wines
Kicked the day off with a bottle of Dom Perignon 1996 Beautiful wine…apple, grapefruit, minerals, spice and fresh brioche stretched tautly over a framework of brilliant acidity. With time in the glass, praline and creme brule characters rear their heads. The ‘96 is seamless and a class act. Will cellar beautifully to become a classic Dom

In Margaret River
After a five hour flight and four hour drive we had the perfect introduction to Margaret River….a beer was placed immediately in my hand, followed by a drive down to Prevelly and a bottle of Cape Mentelle Chardonnay 2003 consumed sitting on the grass at the rivermouth watching the sunset over the ocean.

Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill (Napa Valley) 1986

Twenty Bench (Napa Valley) 2002
Good Napa cabernets priced under $20 are as rare as hens' teeth these days. The Twenty Bench is no hen's tooth. At $17/bottle, however, it is an acceptable cabernet and a reasonable value. There is decent berry flavor, but also...
