Zinfandel
As wines age,
prices will drop
The greatest growth in sales among red varietals will likely occur in
pinot noir, followed by syrah, red zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon,
the respondents projected.
Governor
vetoes zinfandel bill
Zinfandel has been denied the distinction of being Californias official
wine, as well as its historic wine. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed
legislation on Monday that aimed to make zinfandel the states historic
wine -- wording that was softened from Californias official wine after
opposition from much of the states wine industry.
Winewaves
Cooler weather and shorter days signal the switch back to red wine
season, and Zinfandel is high on my list between now and Thanksgiving.
The fruit for Cline Cellars Zinfandel 2005 was largely from Lodi and
Oakley (in Contra Costa County).

Plus picks: No big minuses
2004 Peachy Canyon Winery Zinfandel Incredible Red Bin 119, California
($8.99) - Peachy Canyon is a good name in the Zin business, and this is
as big and juicy as any Zinfandel. 2004 Temptation Zinfandel,
California ($11.99) - This one was a bit too high in alcohol content,
leading to quite a spicy taste.
South
Central Coast Zinfandel
In the southern part of the large Central Coast region, Paso Robles is
the one appellation with a large number of wineries that produce
Zinfandel. Zinfandel has the reputation of being high in alcohol, which
is not unfounded.
Pour
Decision: Schwarzenegger Zings Zinfandel
"Whether it is a cabernet from Napa or Sonoma, a delicate pinot noir
from the Central Coast, a zinfandel from the San Joaquin Valley or
Sierra foothills, California produces some of the finest wines in the
world. Zinfandel, known for its sweet undertones and intensely fruity
flavors, is just one of many varieties coming from the booming
California wine industry, which net $26 billion and shipped more than
532.4 gallons in 2005.
Wine of the Week: Pink
Truck Wine 2005 (CA) $ 11
Technically speaking this wine is a hand-crafted blend of three
varietals: Grenache, Mourvedre and Zinfandel.
Dry
Creek produces winners
Consider the 2003 Dry Creek Vineyard Beeson Ranch Zinfandel. The Somers
Ranch vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, at just 5 acres, is even smaller,
but the 2003 Dry Creek Vineyard Somers Ranch Zinfandel that comes from
that small plot is extraordinary, elegant, rich and loaded with
full-fruit flavor.
Positivity:
A Canceled Wedding Its Transformed into a Celebration
Bottles of Zinfandel lined the bar, hotel workers set up giant speakers
by a parquet dance floor, and chefs in white hats prepared a lavish
meal of Vermont cheddar cheese soup, filet mignon, and crab-stuffed
shrimp.
Tasting
wine locally - it’s not just wineries
During a recent afternoon, Wall was pouring an old-vine Zinfandel,
released a couple of years ago from Howell Mountain Vineyards. He added
the 2003 Beatty Ranch Zinfandel, also released by Howell Mountain
Vineyards, is also excellent.
An
Emerging Wine Region: California's Gold Country
At Boeger, pictured above, and other Sierra Nevada wineries, Zinfandel
grapes were planted as early as 1850s and grape growing became a
popular alterantive for unlucky miners.
Zinfandel
deserves to be Californias state wine
I'm talking about his veto of the bill that would have designated
Zinfandel as California's official, historical wine. Nonetheless,
Schwarzenegger's refusal to acknowledge the historical, cultural and
social importance of Zinfandel is unjustifiable.
Mendocinos
time to shine
Even neighboring wineries will grow drastically different grapes: It's
not uncommon to find Burgundian Pinot Noir grown right next door to
Apulian Negro Amaro and Californian Zinfandel. And the label called
simply "Graziano" is dedicated to what the third-generation Ukiah-area
winegrower refers to as "traditional Mendocino wines" Zinfandel, Petite
Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.
Maturing
Wine Industry to Offer Quality Wines at Lower Prices ...
The greatest growth in sales among red varietals will likely occur in
pinot noir, followed by syrah, red zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon,
the respondents projected. The greatest shortage of grapes among red
varietals is anticipated to be in pinot noir grapes, followed by red
zinfandel.
Sonoma
wine country holds autumn charm
With charming old towns like Sonoma and Glen Ellen, Highway 12 is a
favorite route through a region that produces everything from peppery
zinfandel to buttery cheese.

Winemaker

The white wine variety, sauvignon blanc, appears to have escaped the
current wine glut in Australia, with at least one winemaker, Hardy,
advertising for Riverland growers with uncontracted fruit. Hardy's
chief winemaker Peter Dawson says sauvignon blanc has not been affected
by the oversupply.

Chardonnay
WTN:
Corey Creek Vineyards 2005 Reserve Chardonnay
Too often, Long Island chardonnay is severely over oaked in an attempt

Let the fruit stand on its own
Chardonnay outsells sauvignon blanc by better than 7-to-1, according to

the natural flavors of chardonnay are butter and toast flavors that
come from the winemaking and the new oak barrels, not the grape.
