Zinfandel

As wines age, prices will drop
The greatest growth in sales among red varietals will likely occur in pinot noir, followed by syrah, red zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon, the respondents projected.

Governor vetoes zinfandel bill
Zinfandel has been denied the distinction of being Californias official wine, as well as its historic wine. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed legislation on Monday that aimed to make zinfandel the states historic wine -- wording that was softened from Californias official wine after opposition from much of the states wine industry.

Winewaves
Cooler weather and shorter days signal the switch back to red wine season, and Zinfandel is high on my list between now and Thanksgiving. The fruit for Cline Cellars Zinfandel 2005 was largely from Lodi and Oakley (in Contra Costa County).

Cost Plus picks: No big minuses
2004 Peachy Canyon Winery Zinfandel Incredible Red Bin 119, California ($8.99) - Peachy Canyon is a good name in the Zin business, and this is as big and juicy as any Zinfandel. 2004 Temptation Zinfandel, California ($11.99) - This one was a bit too high in alcohol content, leading to quite a spicy taste.

South Central Coast Zinfandel
In the southern part of the large Central Coast region, Paso Robles is the one appellation with a large number of wineries that produce Zinfandel. Zinfandel has the reputation of being high in alcohol, which is not unfounded.

Pour Decision: Schwarzenegger Zings Zinfandel
"Whether it is a cabernet from Napa or Sonoma, a delicate pinot noir from the Central Coast, a zinfandel from the San Joaquin Valley or Sierra foothills, California produces some of the finest wines in the world. Zinfandel, known for its sweet undertones and intensely fruity flavors, is just one of many varieties coming from the booming California wine industry, which net $26 billion and shipped more than 532.4 gallons in 2005.

Dry Creek produces winners
Consider the 2003 Dry Creek Vineyard Beeson Ranch Zinfandel. The Somers Ranch vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, at just 5 acres, is even smaller, but the 2003 Dry Creek Vineyard Somers Ranch Zinfandel that comes from that small plot is extraordinary, elegant, rich and loaded with full-fruit flavor.

An Emerging Wine Region: California's Gold Country

Zinfandel deserves to be Californias state wine
I'm talking about his veto of the bill that would have designated Zinfandel as California's official, historical wine. Nonetheless, Schwarzenegger's refusal to acknowledge the historical, cultural and social importance of Zinfandel is unjustifiable.

Mendocinos time to shine
Even neighboring wineries will grow drastically different grapes: It's not uncommon to find Burgundian Pinot Noir grown right next door to Apulian Negro Amaro and Californian Zinfandel. And the label called simply "Graziano" is dedicated to what the third-generation Ukiah-area winegrower refers to as "traditional Mendocino wines" Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.

The greatest growth in sales among red varietals will likely occur in pinot noir, followed by syrah, red zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon, the respondents projected. The greatest shortage of grapes among red varietals is anticipated to be in pinot noir grapes, followed by red zinfandel.
