Cabernet Sauvignon
Central
Coast Cabernet Sauvignon
When it comes to California Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley is the star
in the klieg lights; Sonoma County is the less glamorous character
actor still capable of stealing the show on any given night. With some
exceptions -- one is the Santa Cruz Mountains, led by the impeccable
wines made by Paul Draper at Ridge Vineyards -- California's other
Cabernet Sauvignon-producing regions compete for bit parts or wait in
the wings for their turn.
Worth
its weight in gold?
In June, the new owners of Screaming Eagle Winery in Oakville sent a
letter to their mailing list subscribers, offering them the opportunity
to purchase a three-pack of 2003 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet
Sauvignon for $1,500. A typical bottle of Napa Valley Cabernet
Sauvignon with a suggested retail price of $50 was likely sold to a
wholesaler for $25, who then sold it to a retailer for approximately
$33.

Cabernet sauvignon is grown in most areas of California's wine country,
including the large Central Coast appellation, which is about 2,448
square miles and runs from the San Francisco Bay south to Santa Barbara
and as far east as Livermore. With the range of climates along the
Central Coast, cabernet sauvignon is made in many styles, from medium-
