Three Rivers Winery 2006 Malbec

The Award-Winning Wine:
Three Rivers Winery 2006 Malbec (Columbia Valley)

Reason for Reviewing:
Three Rivers Winery 2006 Malbec was one of three Three Rivers Winery wines that earned top-honor Gold Medals at the 2009 Grand Harvest Awards. They also won Gold for their 2005 Boushey Vineyard Syrah and their Three Rivers 2005 Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine also won Gold Medal-Seattle Wine Awards 2009 and Chairman's Award (Unanimous Gold)-Riverside International Wine Competition 2009.

Noteworthy:
The name Three Rivers represents the three most prominent rivers in the appellations from which the winery sources its grapes: the Columbia, Snake, and Walla Walla Rivers.

Winery Notes:
Boysenberry pie and smoky spices embody this wine’s unique character.

AlaWine Notes:
Three Rivers Winery 2006 Malbec displays in the glass as a deep purple color. Red fruit aromas, cherry, plum, raspberry, rise to the nose. Whole plum, cherry, and raspberry carry over onto the palate and linger through a long, light leather finish.

Bottom Line:
Three Rivers Winery 2006 Malbec is a blend of Malbec 77% and Cabernet Sauvignon 23%. It is a big, fruit filled wine, full of flavor. Would pair well with smoked or spicy meats, sausages, or Bar-B-Q steaks. Suggested retail price is $29. Overall composite score: 95 points.

Adobe Road Winery 2005 Bavarian Lion Cabernet Sauvignon

The Award-Winning Wine:
Adobe Road Winery 2005 Bavarian Lion Cabernet Sauvignon

Reason for Reviewing:
The Adobe Road Winery 2005 Bavarian Lion Cabernet Sauvignon was one of two Adobe Road Wines that earned a Double Gold Medal award at the 2009 Florida International Wine Competition. The other wine was their 2006 Sonoma Pinot Noir. Adobe Road Winery also holds the distinction of being just one of two wineries (with Airfield Estates in Washington) to win two Double Golds in this competition.

Noteworthy:
Adobe Road Winery is owned by renowned sportscar racer and entrepreneur Kevin Buckler and his wife, Debra. Kevin’s accomplishments as a driver include class wins at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona (2002) and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans (2002), an overall win at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona (2003), and the title of Porsche World Cup Champion in 2002.

Winery Notes:
There is cassis, blackberry, caramel, expresso, and light notes of cedar which lead to a deliciously round mouth feel of cranberry, chocolate and vanilla.

AlaWine Notes:
Adobe Road Winery 2005 Bavarian Lion Cabernet Sauvignon pours into the glass as a very dark ruby-garnet color. Fragrant aromas of dark berries lift to the nose. Ripe blackberry and black currant flavors open on the palate in a smooth mouth and linger through a moderately dry finish with a light leather highlight.

Bottom Line:
Adobe Road Winery 2005 Bavarian Lion Cabernet Sauvignon is a very quaffable and delicious wine, balanced and well integrated, with juicy fruit and interesting layers of complementary flavor complexities. Suggested retail price is $45. Overall composite score: 97 points.
