Pianetta Winery 2009 Barbera won the Best of Class award for Best Barbera at the 2012 Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition.
Noteworthy:
The Pianetta farming family spans four generations.
Winery Notes:
Blackberry pops from the glass. Olive oil and violet floral notes take a backseat to pomegranate flavors mixed with a hint of spice.. subtle hints of vanilla...
AlaWine Notes:
Pianetta Winery 2009 Barbera pours in the glass as a deep ruby color. Vibrant bouquet of dark berries in a floral context on the nose. Lots of berry flavors on the palate, framed by bright acidity, leading to a long dry toasty finish.
Bottom Line:
Pianetta Winery 2009 Barbera is a hearty, medium-bodied, Barbera with ripe fruit flavors, some complexity, and moderate tannins. A quaffable wine that would pair well with a wide range of dinner menus. Unlike lighter Barberas, this wine likely would deepen with some cellaring. Suggested retail price is $28. Overall composite score: 91 points.

2012 Newport Seafood & Wine Festival Wine Competition Winners
The results are in from last weekend's Newport [OR] Seafood & Wine Festival’s Commercial Wine Competition. More than 150 wines were entered; 24 earned Gold Medals. The Ponzi Vineyards 2008 Chardonnay won Best of Show honors, ahead of Gold Medal winners Troon Vineyard 2009 Red Blend and Silver Falls Vineyard 2009 Sparkling. The other Gold-Medal wines are:
