Riesling

Cool classics under the scorching sun
The most undervalued but successful Australian combination is the Clare Valley and riesling. Taylors now has 25 vintages under its belt, and its 2004 vintage ($16.95 at Woolworths but often on special) is yet another refined and racy Clare riesling.

It's a really good value in an Alsace-style Riesling.

For Riesling fans, the 2004 Eroica is a must try (and a little splurge at $23). It's uncomplicated for Riesling rookies and beautifully balanced for Riesling aficionados.

Leo Buring 2005 Leonay Riesling
In a nut shell, this is a more refined and exceptionally well balanced version of the 2005 Eden Valley Riesling. My advice, try the standard Eden Valley Riesling and if it tickles your fancy, put a bottle or two of the Leonay away for a few years.

Alsace in Anderson Valley
The starring grapes of Alsatian wines are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Muscat. Anderson Valley has 64.6 acres of Gewurztraminer (ga-VERTZ-tra-meen-er), 25 acres of Pinot Gris and less than 10 acres each of Muscat Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Riesling, according to Glenn McGourty, the UC farm adviser for Mendocino County.

His recommendation was that we try some Sauvignon Blanc, a dry Riesling (he mentioned Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Dry Riesling as “specifically created for that kind of food”), and perhaps a Pinot Noir. We tasted three wines with our meal: 2004 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, 2002 Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Dry Riesling, and 2001 Byron Central Coast Pinot Noir.

A well-chosen riesling can be a true delight: perfect with food, not too heavy and a good value. That goes double for German riesling, often the world’s best and almost assuredly its most intimidating.

Its time to start drinking Canadian.
They've planted a broad range of vinifera grapes, including cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer, along with several hybrids, notably Vidal Blanc. I also liked the sturdy, crisp 2004 Cave Spring Cellars Reserve Riesling, which combines the sturdiness of an Alsatian Riesling with the soaring aromatics of a Mosel Riesling from Germany.

Algarve Wine Society tastes German Riesling wines
MEMBERS OF the Algarve Wine Society gathered at the Pestana Levante Hotel in Armação de Pêra recently to taste six Riesling wines, from the private cellar of the society’s new managing director, Erla Walther. After tasting and comparing five dry Rieslings, from the Kloster Eberbach 2004 vintage, members were given the opportunity to taste a late harvested 2001 Riesling Auslese Trocken, similar to an Alsatian Grand Cru Riesling.

The appeal of mature German Rieslings
I love Riesling but I rarely drink German Rieslings. But the other day, I had guests at home that were German wine lovers and so I took that opportunity to open a bottle of 1996 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese that was quietly lying in my cellar since 1999.

Pooley, Home Hill are top drops
Pooley Coal River Riesling 2004 has beaten world-class competition to take the mantle as Tasmania's best white wine at the 2006 Tasmanian Wine Show. Judges praised the chardonnay, riesling and museum wines fields as particularly strong this year.

Clare Valley winemakers plan UK promotion
"Clare is ideally suited to demonstrate its distinctive regional style based on Riesling in particular which has a unique style and is one of the great wines in the world," he said. Mr Mitchell said the main topic for the tutored tastings was the ability of the Clare Valley to produce not only premium Riesling, which is normally associated with a cooler climate, but also many robust red wines that are usually produced in a warmer climate.

Sexy, sweet for Valentines Day
When I wrote about this wine last year, I mistakenly called it a Riesling. Scheurebe is a grape variety, a crossing of two well-known white grapes (Silvaner and Riesling) bred in 1916 by Georg Scheu (pronounced "Shoy"), who later lent his name.

And ever since he saw my eyes ignite at the first sip of a magically good late-harvest auslese, he has become my personal riesling guru. "Then we shall have a riesling feast!" he decreed.
